Halcyon Labs owned a tall, bare entrance nobody stayed in, plus a windswept concrete yard visited only at break time. The ask: let planting tempt people in early and keep them a while — all without shifting a single wall.

• The hurdle: dim daylight, strict fire-lane rules and a yard caught in a wind tunnel.
• Our take: shade-loving feature trees inside, sheltered evergreen drifts outdoors, with seats tucked among the beds.
• The outcome: lunchtime use of the yard rose tenfold in one summer, with fortnightly tending since.
